Job Description:
As part of a dynamic team of scientists, engineers, and technicians, this role involves collaborative work in the development, maintenance, and field deployment of the National Centers for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) Integrated Surface Flux System (ISFS).
This role encompasses the development of advanced meteorological instrumentation, as well as overseeing maintenance, field deployment, and field logistics support.
Responsibilities include erecting and climbing towers, configuring and testing sensors/instrumentation, troubleshooting technical issues, and documenting activities. Also, ensure equipment readiness for future field deployments by cleaning, servicing, calibrating, and upgrading sensors and infrastructure.
This position requires worldwide deployment of this facility, including traveling to remote locations.

Compensation Range: Salary Range: $55,227- $69.033 *Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, and skills relevant to the role.*

Key Responsibilities:
1.Field Project Support Duties
- Assist in planning field activities, including selecting infrastructure, adapting equipment for specific circumstances, and coordinating logistics.
- Participate in deploying instrumentation for domestic and international field operations, including testing, configuring, packing, and setting up and tearing down equipment in the field.
- Responsible for on-site operations, maintenance, and equipment repairs during field programs, which may cover an extended area.
- Maintain, clean, and organize equipment before and after field deployments.
2.Development Duties
- Support the development of meteorological instruments by assembling, measuring, characterizing, testing, troubleshooting, and documenting electronic circuits at various levels using electronic test equipment (e.g., digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies).
- Read and interpret engineering documents (e.g., circuit schematics, board layouts, bills of material, test plans, and wiring diagrams) to assist in constructing, prototyping, and troubleshooting components, circuits, PCBs, system modules, and cable assemblies.
3.Lab Duties
- Responsible for the technical maintenance of EOL/ISFS instrumentation and infrastructure, including cleaning, repairing, and organizing equipment after field use.
- Assists with sensor calibrations
REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience (Required):
- Graduation certificate from a technical institute in an electrical or mechanical field and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to work for extended periods (typically not exceeding an aggregate of 90 days per year) on field assignments to domestic and international locations.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid US driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets UCAR’s acceptability requirements for driving on UCAR business. All drivers must maintain a valid driver's license and, when using personal vehicles, must maintain compulsory insurance. UCAR employees and authorized individuals driving on UCAR business shall observe all applicable driving laws. They shall not use cellular telephones or engage in text messaging or any other conduct that would constitute distracted driving. UCAR Human Resources will review MVR's of all regular drivers.
- Must be able to obtain a passport and participate in foreign travel.
- Some or all of the work in this position description must be performed on-site at UCAR campuses or remote field sites.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of electronic components and fundamental understanding of electronic circuits.
- Ability to set up, configure, and utilize analog and digital test equipment, including Digital Multi-Meters, oscilloscopes, and power supplies.
- Capable of interpreting wiring diagrams, electronic circuit schematics, and printed circuit board layout plots to assemble, test, and perform basic troubleshooting on electronic assemblies.
- Skilled in soldering surface mount components as small as 0402 size packages, fine-pitched integrated circuits, and cable assemblies using hand soldering tools.
- Skilled in using mechanical hand tools and basic machine tools such as a drill press.
- Proficient in using standard personal computer technology and application software such as Excel, Word, or Google Suite equivalents.
- Willing and able to participate in domestic and international field programs.
- Able to work sometimes in harsh field environments and occasionally in remote locations.
- Willingness to climb towers (with appropriate safety equipment and training) up to 35 meters (115’).
- Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
- Able to work with diverse people from various backgrounds and disciplines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but Not Required:
- Basic understanding of meteorology or physics.
- Basic knowledge of the Linux computer operating system at the command-line level.
- Ability to operate a forklift or similar equipment.
- Skill in installing and working on towers up to 35 meters.
