Lead Project Engineer IV (Airborne Phased Array Radar - APAR)

This engineer IV will support NCAR’s vision of accelerating progress toward a thriving and sustainable society by providing overall technical leadership for the Airborne Phased Array Radar (APAR) development. Job Location: Boulder, CO

Job Location Type: Hybrid (a combination of Remote and On-site is required) with a requirement to travel and work in remote field locations on occasion, typically for not more than 7 days per trip.

Position Type & Term: Full-Time (5-Year Term)
Hiring Range: Annual Salary Range: $119,418-$ 170,000  *Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.*

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading and directing the effort of engineering disciplines associated with the APAR development including radar hardware, software, aeronautical, mechanical, and electrical systems; and leading and/or providing support through program gates/milestones such as the preliminary design review (PDR), critical design review (CDR), fabrication, testing, and verification of requirements for the APAR system.
  • Manages and supervises the APAR engineering team, ensuring design reviews are accomplished, engineering development meets pre-defined requirements, and technical objectives/schedules are being met
  • Supports the Senior Systems Engineer with managing technical project risks, engineering and test/validation documents, and test plans.
  • Presents at and participates in conferences, meetings & workshops as required in support of the APAR program.
  •  Supports the writing of proposals to secure additional funding for the APAR development.

 

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and nine years of engineering experience or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and at least seven years of experience or
  • Ph.D. degree and at least five years of experience

Desired, but not required: 

  • Master of Science degree in engineering.
  • General understanding of the use of radars in the study of atmospheric science.
  • Hands-on experience with antenna testing including near-field and far-field measurement techniques.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

  • Advanced knowledge of R&D and operational radar systems Broad technical knowledge of cross-disciplines or deep knowledge of one discipline.
  • Demonstrated analytical, applied mathematics, and problem-solving skills common to radar/RF engineering.
  • Demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of current technology trends.
  • Skill in motivating staff in large projects.
  • Proven knowledge in the design and development of phased array radar systems.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in phased array calibration techniques.
  • Experienced in recognizing and solving Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues, especially on airborne platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a Fourth Generation Language, e.g., Python, MATLAB, IDL, etc.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment with individuals of diverse backgrounds and contribute effectively to problem-solving efforts.
