Senior Planner – Urban Forester

This position administers County tree protection and replacement and canopy/scenic road tree ordinances; inventories trees on county-owned lands and recommends tree health and replacement measures for these trees to the Facilities Department; provides technical assistance and education to the public, county staff, and elected officials; and helps organize volunteer and grant solicitation events and opportunities. This employee brings with her/him a knowledge of arboriculture that has been imparted through a variety of vocations as described in the Minimum Education and Experience section of this job description. The work involves considerable public contact and requires the exercise of patience, sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy.

  • Administers the Amelia Island-Nassau County tree protection and replacement program, including staffing the Nassau County – Amelia Island Tree Commission.
  • Reviews development projects for compliance with tree protection and canopy/scenic roads ordinances.
  • Conducts inspections of tree installation and tree barricades.
  • Receives and responds to tree-related inquiries, requests for assistance and/or complaints from County employees, outside agencies and the public.
  • Maintains plans and specifications in compliance with County policy and planning principles.
  • Plans and makes recommendations for county-owned facilities in terms of tree health and planting.
  • Works with non-profits, schools, and volunteers on environmental programs such as removal of exotic vegetation, tree planting, and environmental education.
  • Presents tree-related education to community groups, schools, civic groups, and clubs, and develops brochures and social media presentations.
  • Assists in seeking funds and administering tree-related projects.
  • Seeks training opportunities including conferences, workshops, and webinars.
  • Composes, types, prepares, processes, files, copies and/or transmits a variety of documents, which may include email and letter correspondence, reports, notices, agendas, budget documents, maintenance requests, charts, spreadsheets, manuals, workorders, various forms, logs, etc.
  • Attends meetings of elected and appointed boards and committees, prepares and presents oral presentations and staff reports at such meetings when assigned by the Planning Director.

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, or Planning supplemented by a minimum four (4) years of  working in a variety of tree-related vocations including but not limited to arborist, environmental planner, groundskeeper, nursery manager, tree farmer, urban forester, utility arborist/forester, wildland restorationist or similar fields that have imparted to the employee a wide range and/or in-depth knowledge of trees and landscapes; OR a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Geography or Public Administration supplemented by a minimum two (2) years of tree-related vocations as described above; OR a Master’s Degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Forestry or Landscape Architecture supplemented by at a minimum two (2) years of planning experience.  GIS experience is preferred.  Must possess valid State Driver's License.

 

The annual range for this position is $61,021.65 - $92,851.55. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
