This recruitment is being conducted to fill a current vacancy in the Transportation and Public Works Department. This is a first-line supervisory management classification in the Transportation and Public Works Department, Field Services Division. Individuals in this position work under the direction of the Fleet Superintendent to ensure the City is provided high quality vehicle and equipment repairs at reasonable cost. The primary objective of this position is to plan, assign, supervise and review the work of entry and journey-level workers in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light and heavy duty equipment and vehicles.
Responsibilities include providing a safe working environment for garage employees and providing safe, dependable emergency equipment, passenger transportation, and street repair and utilities maintenance vehicles for the City's operation. This class is distinguished from the Fleet Superintendent in that the latter provides overall administrative direction to all activities of the Section while the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor has administrative responsibilities that extend only to fleet maintenance service on a given shift.
License or Certificate: This classification requires the use of a personal or City vehicle or City equipment while conducting City business. In order to drive/operate combination vehicles with air brakes, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles and equipment safely and must possess, and maintain a valid Class A California motor vehicle operator's license and necessary endorsements by the end of probation.

Essential Duties
The following duties are considered essential for this job classification:
- Supervise, train, plan, assign and evaluate work of subordinates, including garage, administrative, and parts department staff;
- ensure adherence to safe work practices by shop personnel;
- provide customer service in a timely and professional manner;
- prepare detailed cost estimates and make recommendations regarding feasibility of in-house or outside vendor repairs;
- prepare operational memoranda and reports;
- inspect work in progress and completed work for compliance with policies, procedures and standard trade practices;
- maintain and audit data records in fleet software of time, materials and equipment used in fleet management and parts room operations; and
- create, reconcile and present reports for customers, staff and outside agencies for billing, budget planning, compliance and equipment maintenance history.

- Make initial inspections in difficult cases and diagnose mechanical defects;
- order supplies and materials;
- coordinate equipment repair work with operating departments;
- coordinate outside vendor repairs;
- assist with writing specifications for the purchase of vehicles and/or equipment;
- check new equipment to ensure that it meets specifications;
- and perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance management; techniques of collaborative problem solving and effective conflict resolution; methods, practices, materials and tools of the automotive mechanic trade; operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light- and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles; occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work; principles of gasoline and diesel engines; pneumatic, hydraulic and alternate fueled vehicle systems.
Ability to: Plan, lay out and assign the work of skilled mechanics and other shop workers; diagnose defects in and repair a wide variety of heavy equipment and vehicles; prepare and maintain records and reports; supervise, train and evaluate subordinates; maintain harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively with others orally and in writing; comprehend and make inferences from written materials; enter data into and retrieve data from a terminal, personal computer or keyboard device.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient years of experience as a journey level mechanic, including some supervisory experience, to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; Education - Specialized automotive, equipment repair and/or supervisory courses.

Additional Information
Fleet Maintenance Supervisors work primarily indoors in a mechanical maintenance shop environment; they frequently leave the garage to inspect vehicles or equipment. Incumbents communicate orally with others one-to-one both in person and over the telephone to clarify vehicle and equipment problems; they also communicate orally with others in a group setting when conducting and participating in safety meetings or new equipment training. Incumbents learn new, job-related material through oral instruction in an on-the-job setting, as when receiving training from vendors on new equipment. To ensure that staff and equipment are operating within state and federal standards and regulations, incumbents observe or monitor vehicles, equipment, staff and data and review or check the work product of others. Fleet Maintenance Supervisors review estimates of labor or material costs for body work and repairs for accuracy. When completing paper work at a desk, incumbents sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will. They must be able to hear alarms and other auditory warnings, such as low air alarms and vehicle or equipment noise during road testing. When road testing vehicles, incumbents make fine, highly controlled muscular movements and coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously. When communicating with others via e-mail or preparing performance evaluations, incumbents operate office equipment requiring repetitive arm/hand movements. When inspecting repairs or checking completed equipment, incumbents climb vehicle steps. Fleet Maintenance Supervisors climb over and under rough or uneven surfaces when inspecting vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Fleet Maintenance Supervisor may be assigned to work shifts that include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Individuals must be available to work any shift.
- Individuals who participate in a final hiring interview will be asked to sign a release authorizing prior employers to provide employment information as part of a background check. The check will include obtaining information from former employers on alcohol and controlled substances test results for the last two years.
