Assistant Director for Bias Response Initiatives
Job Summary
The Assistant Director for the Bias Response Program serves as the primary administrator for the Campus Belonging process and is responsible for providing students, faculty, staff, and other campus constituents with advice and resources in response to reported incidents of hate, bias, or behaviors that negatively affect the sense of belonging and inclusion on campus. In addition, the Assistant Director responds to concerns reported to Campus Belonging, liaises with campus stakeholders, and works directly with involved parties to address impact.
The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Campus Climate and Culture in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion's Academic Inclusive Excellence unit.
Management and Operation of Campus Belonging process
- Intaking reports and assessing the merits to determine appropriate action
- Monitoring the unit inbox and responding pursuant to the Campus Belonging protocol
- Contacting and meeting with parties and assigning actions for follow up with parties
- Managing associated databases and recording keeping systems
- Monitoring and assessing reporting trends to identify climate or other systemic issues
Education and Outreach
- Facilitating educational conversations, dialogue, and mediation between parties as appropriate
- Developing and facilitating education and training on hate/bias prevention, freedom of speech, academic freedom, and the Campus Belonging process.
- Facilitating campus and unit outreach or training when requested or required
- Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with departments that have complementary missions to the Campus Belonging process, including but not limited to the Office for Student Conflict Resolution, the Office for Access & Equity, Student Success, Inclusion & Belonging, and the Division of Public Safety
Data Reporting and Analysis
- Collecting, analyzing and reporting data to inform the Illinois campus community and to facilitate compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Providing weekly status report to unit leadership
- Collecting data in response to specific requests, including but not limited to FOIA requests

Preferred Qualifications
- Five years of responsibility in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, mediation, or restorative justice processes
- Experience developing comprehensive, collaborative programs in higher education settings
- Previous experience facilitating group mediation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of hate/bias prevention programming and intervention
- Understanding of mediation, conflict resolution and/or restorative justice practices
- Knowledge of issues of academic freedom, First Amendment, and human rights
- Demonstrated problem solving, critical analysis, takes initiative, judgment and decision-making skills.
- Ability to remain calm in high-stress and political situations
- Exceptional organizational and multitasking capabilities to meet stringent deadlines and produce accurate, detail-oriented work.
- Effective teamwork skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/1/2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.
