This position performs preventive, scheduled, and routine mechanical maintenance of diesel or gasoline engine powered equipment and vehicles in support of County operations. Must have own tools from ¼ to 1 inch (6mm to 25mm metric sizes), in wrenches and socket sets. Follows directions and reports to Road & Bridge Supervisor. Works a forty (40) hour week. May require overtime and holidays.
- Supervises the Preventive Maintenance Mechanic in performance of assigned duties.
- Perform, analysis and diagnosis of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and fuel systems.
- Performs routine repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Reads and comprehends repair orders and manufacturer’s service manuals to include interpretation of chematic diagrams pertaining to fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Required to complete all written documentation related to the job function.
- Services and trouble-shoots vehicle and equipment heating and air conditioning systems.
- Diagnoses, and resolves electrical malfunctions in starting, ignition and lighting systems.
- Repairs and replaces components in exhaust systems.
- Diagnoses, services and repairs engine cooling and fuel systems.
- Diagnoses, services and repairs manual transmissions, clutches, power take off and drive train components.
- Repairs and replaces suspension systems on wheeled and tracked equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs front end and steering systems.
- Diagnoses, repairs and replaces components in hydraulic, air and cable operated brake systems.
- Evaluates component wear, repairs and replaces track systems (pins, bushings, rollers, and idler wheels).
- Diagnoses, repairs and replaces components of hydraulic systems to include hose, pumps, actuating cylinders and controls.
- Welds and fabricates equipment and machinery.

This position requires Graduation from high school or General Education Equivalency Diploma and two (2) years experience as an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic. Possession of a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with no restriction for airbrake and must possess tanker and hazardous material endorsement prior to application. Certification of levels of training and qualification by a recognized authority such as National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Must have Diesel Engine and Brakes certificates and must have one of the following certificates: Drive Train, or Suspension & Steering. May substitute with a certificate in Diesel Mechanic from an accredited program of no less than one and half (1 ½) years with two years as a Preventive Maintenance Mechanic.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment including dump trucks, dozers, hydraulic excavators, mowing equipment, bucket loaders and road graders.
- Knowledge of the methods and practices utilized in repair and renovation of heavy equipment.
- Perform basic computer operations for recording and researching maintenance data.
- Perform operational testing to determine serviceability of equipment and vehicles.
- Weld metals and repair vehicles and equipment using heliarc and acetylene gas.
- Read, write and speak the English language.
- Read and interpret manufacture’s service and repair manuals.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment retrieval and evacuation procedures and techniques.
The hourly rate for this position is $19.1091. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
