POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid. Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in a 2017 Stanford University study. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Ombudsperson serves as a designated neutral officer who is available to offer objective perspective on the issues of concern to students. The Ombudsperson is not an advocate for any individual or the University; nor does the Ombudsperson's role replaces existing College policies for conflict/grievance resolution. The Ombudsperson is independent from existing administrative structures and shall have direct communication as needed with the Vice President of Student Affairs. The Ombudsperson is responsible for maintaining the highest level of professionalism, confidentiality, integrity, sound judgment and treat all individuals with dignity and respect.

 

The College Ombudsperson will also carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Advise those requesting consultation with interpretation of University policies and procedures;
  • Consults with parties involved to clarify and analyze issues, focus discussions, and offer possible resolution alternatives;
  • Refer inquirers to supervisors and/or appropriate College officials who can address the matters of concern;
  • Advocate for students to the Division of Student Affairs by generating weekly reports about issues which may negatively impact student progress and graduation;
  • Generate quarterly trend reports for the Office of the Vice President and Institutional Research Department;
  • Make recommendations to the Vice President of Student Affairs about divisional processes and services which will improve student satisfaction;
  • Collaborate with the Deputy to the Vice President to design and implement community education initiatives based on divisional learning outcomes. The curriculum will focus on the following themes: students’ rights and responsibilities, leadership development, self- efficacy, and conflict management;
  • The College Ombudsperson will also assist the Vice President with student judicial administration as it relates to the effective delivery of counseling, advising and facilitation of student grievance procedures including the Student Conduct and Academic Integrity;
  • Advocate for students with alleged violations of the University and College Academic Integrity Policies;
  • Compile and submit complaints on behalf of student;
  • Identify, evaluate and report on campus national trends and issues within student discipline and work collaboratively with other departments to respond to the findings;
  • Create, manage and monitor secure and confidential databases;
  • Maintain and update all student consumer information as related to Student Affairs;
  • Support major college-wide events such as commencement, orientation, registration and honors convocation;
  • Participate in campus-wide retention and persistence outreach and activities.

 

This position is based in Queens, NY.

 

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and six years related experience required.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in an appropriate field of study, and not fewer than six (6) years of advising experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting.
  • Excellent organizational, presentation and written/oral communication skills; ability to provide outstanding customer service in a fast paced, deadline driven environment; and possess an understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of a multiethnic campus community
  • Able to initiate projects.
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends.
