About the Position:
Recreation Supervisors develop and supervise staff in a wide range of programs that provide recreation experiences, foster human development, promote health and wellness, support economic development, increase cultural unity and facilitate community problem solving. Assignments in the position are varied, and include: Recreation Centers (inc. Contract Classes), Aquatics, Neighborhood Services (Underserved Youth), Recreation Enrichment (Camps, Seniors, and Park Attractions), and Sports & Permits.  All assignments include substantial operations and maintenance responsibilities for public recreation facilities and parks.  Assignments can rotate on a regular basis.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a passion for public service and creating community through recreational programs and services.  The successful candidate will be a motivated leader with the skills required to work collaboratively, provide excellent customer service and communicate professionally both verbally and written.  In addition, the ideal candidate will possess professional level experience in:

  • Program planning, development and implementation
  • Staff supervision including staff development, scheduling and performance evaluations
  • Budget planning, preparation and monitoring
  • Oversite of programming, scheduling and maintenance of recreation facilities

The following are examples of typical essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervise planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of a wide variety of recreational programs and events
  • Manage the use and provide general supervision over the operation of parks and recreation facilities
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff, investigating and addressing performance issues as necessary
  • Interview and recommend hiring of regular staff, interview and select temporary and seasonal staff
  • Prepare detailed seasonal staffing and financial plans to support program and budget development, monitor revenue and expenses, prudently allocate resources, and maintain financial records
  • Investigate, resolve and respond to complaints and find solutions to related issues
  • Prepare scope of work specifications and administer service contracts
  • Evaluate and anticipate supplies and equipment necessary for service delivery and initiate processes to procure them
  • Research national trends of public recreation, assess local needs and demographics, evaluate current programs, and plan strategically for the future
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues, community organizations, school districts, private industry and public agencies to support and build coalitions and agreements that will improve services and programs
  • Prepare and present verbal and written reports to governmental agencies and community groups
  • Receive and act upon emergency calls
  • Actively participate on the department supervisors and managers team for the strategic development of parks and recreation services in Santa Rosa
  • Use, and supervise assigned staff use of, computerized systems, including recreation management, staff scheduling, and asset management

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:  Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient years of experience in the delivery and operation of recreation programs, parks and facilities to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; Education - Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in recreation, physical education, public or business administration, political science, psychology, sociology, social welfare or a related field.

License or Certificate:  Individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C, California Driver License, OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on frequent scheduled or unscheduled visits to various locations in the City that may or may not be reachable by public transportation.

For positions in Aquatics, current certificates in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR, are highly desirable. For all other positions, current certificates in CPR and First Aid are highly desirable.
