Summary: The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for planning and executing 3D Scanning and Printing/Additive Manufacturing processes for customer projects. The engineer is also responsible for inspection and/or reverse engineering of customer projects using material or hardware provided. Serves as expert for an extensive range of 3D scanning services, methods and printing services offered by PADT. Provides technical support to the 3D printer sales team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develops, evaluates, and improves 3D Scanning, Digitizing, Printing and Additive Manufacturing processes and procedures using various 3D methods and technologies.
- Develops 3D scanning and reverse engineering processes and procedures using various contact and non-contact 3D digitizing technologies.
- Provides necessary calibration, service and maintenance of all 3D scanners. Interfaces with internal and external customers to understand specific project requirements and determine suitable processes and workflow.
- Constructs 3D models from scan data to accurately represent the part(s) scanned.
- Uses a variety of 3D modeling and point cloud post processing engineering tools to manipulate the scan data.
- Provides budgetary and lead-time estimates for each project.
- Processes 3D scanning jobs to meet customer specifications and accuracy. Prepares post-processing reports and data as required by the customer’s statement of work.
- Processes the printing jobs to meet customer requirements. Communicates post processing requirements with technicians to ensure parts are finished properly.
- Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding process capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate the manufacturing processes.
- Applies statistical methods to estimate future area requirements and potential.
- Provides technical support including; demonstrations, benchmarks, technical presentations, and training for the sale of 3D printers & scanners.
- Interfaces with scanner manufacturers, material suppliers and service providers to ensure the scanners are in good operating condition.
- Keeps abreast of the latest 3D Scanning technologies, material development and Additive Manufacturing applications and makes recommendations to keep advancing and improving PADT’s 3D manufacturing capabilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an accredited institution is required.
- 5 years of experience in an engineering position with exposure to manufacturing, part validation and quality. Strong Materials Engineering background, specifically with Polymers and Elastomers.
- Experience with Prototyping.
- Experience with Machine Operation, including programming, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Knowledge of FDM (filament deposition modeling), style 3D printers.
- Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, including characteristics, GD & T symbols, specifications and process requirements.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality systems and standards.
- Proficient in SolidWorks 3D (preferred) or similar CAD tool.
- Experience with 3D scanners and point cloud data, a plus.
- Experience in 3D printing processes and materials, a plus
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Inventory software; Design software; Internet software; Order processing systems; Manufacturing software and Contact Management systems.
