GENERAL PURPOSE: Specifications Writer
The Specifications Writer at BLUEFIN, LLC will develop building specifications and details based on our recommendations of roof systems and types of construction for our clients’ facility management decisions. You will be creating building specs using all applicable codes and knowledge of engineering and architecture processes. You will be the client’s main contact from the start of the specification to the projects’ award, where the assigned project manager then handles the project through completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Specifications Writer
- Responsible for developing detailed project specifications and assists project team in coordinating contract documents
- Prepare and develop building specifications, ensuring that Factory Mutual approves the system design prior to writing specifications
- Review in-progress drawings, technical specifications, and offer modifications and improvements when appropriate
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines - phases, milestone deliveries and various project delivery types
- Generate specification outlines and Scope of Services documents
- Visit field sites to review building details, slopes of roofs, flashing heights, set up areas and other field conditions that will affect the way specifications are written
- Participate in process meetings for managed projects (pre-bid meetings, bid openings, schematic review, procedure review)
- Write up bid comparisons of contractor proposals, produce addendums to specifications during the bidding process
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, clients, and internal team members
- Assist with the invoicing process and budget review for specifications
- Maintain awareness of industry reference standards and resources and provides continual development and improvement of BLUEFIN Specifications
- Assists project managers with review and coordination of project agreements relative to professional service and general condition issues
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Specifications Writer
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- 3-5 years of industry related experience required; including but not limited to: Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or Specification Writing
- Associate/Bachelor degree in Architecture, Construction Engineering or related field
- Knowledge of roofing systems, building codes and construction techniques·
- Must be proficient in MS Office
Preferred but not required:
- Proficiency in specifications software programs such as SpecLink
- CSI Certification, Division 7
- AIA, RRO, RRC or related certifications
JOB COMPETENCIES and SKILLS: Specifications Writer
- Strong knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, design trends, products, construction methodology, building systems, material application, and manufacturer-supplier relations
- Strong knowledge of construction procedures and schedules
- Strong knowledge of building envelope components, interior plans and material requirements of all building and facility types (i.e. institutional, schools, cold storage, pharmaceutical, historic, DOD)
- Strong knowledge of building codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents
- Proficiency in specifications software programs such as SpecLink preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and produce results within deadline
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Specifications Writer
- Work is performed in a non-smoking office setting with exposure to CRTs and UV rays
- Work may be performed with exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather
- Usual office environment with long periods of sitting, walking, standing, stooping
- Ability to travel as needed (via vehicle, airplane, etc.)
- Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as email and telephone
- Lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Working hours are flexible but project deadlines are not. Non-conforming work hours may be required to complete projects on time
