Fiberglass Laminator
A Fiberglass Laminator plays an extremely important role in building Sportsman boats. Laminators are responsible for producing molds, decks, hulls, and small parts using fiberglass and other materials. This process begins with a mold into which the material is pressed, poured, or sprayed.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
- Working with fiberglass, resin, and other materials, builds decks, hulls, and small parts meeting high quality standards and daily production numbers of units complete
- Inspect, clean, and assemble molds before beginning work
- Mask off mold areas which are not to be laminated, using cellophane, wax paper, masking tape, or special sprays containing mold-release substances
- Mix catalysts into resins, and saturate cloth and mats with mixtures using brushes
- Release air bubbles and smooth seams using rollers
- Repair or modify damaged or defective glass-fiber parts, checking thicknesses, densities, and contours to ensure a close fit after repair
- Select precut fiberglass mats, cloth, and wood bracing materials as required by projects being assembled
- Spray chopped fiberglass, resins, and catalysts onto prepared molds or dies using pneumatic spray guns with chopper attachments
- Trim cured materials by sawing them with diamond-impregnated cutoff wheels
- Trim excess materials from molds, using hand shears or trimming knives
- Check completed products for conformance to specifications and for defects by measuring with rulers or micrometers, by checking them visually, or by tapping them to detect bubbles or dead spots
- Keep work area clean and organized at all times
- Execute additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- 1 year Gel coat/Lamination experience
- Ability to use small tools, operating air/hand tools, saws, drills and grinders
- Ability to follow instructions
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work as a team member
- Ability to comply with OSHA, MSDS and safety guidelines
- Comprehension of chemicals used in this process
- Ability to work in fast-paced, ever changing environment
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bilingual Spanish/English strongly desirable
- Experience in the marine/boating industry
Work Environment
This job operates in a manufacturing plant environment and requires exposure to chemicals such as gel coat, acetone, etc. This role routinely wears protective clothing and masks. The lamination area is not air conditioned and requires working during hot weather. Requires ability to work in high temperatures during the summer months along with increased humidity.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Requires lifting, standing, kneeling, bending – getting in and out of boats up to 10 hours per day
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. However some teams arrive at 5:00am. Evenings and weekends as necessary.
